• Dota 2 is enjoying another major surge in player activity as The International 2026 takes place in Shanghai. According to data from Steam Charts, the game has reached a peak of approximately 949,000 concurrent players, making it the highest peak recorded since September 2025.

The latest spike comes during the biggest event of the Dota 2 competitive calendar. The International 2026, also known as TI15, is being held from August 13 to August 23 in Shanghai, China, with the world's top teams competing for the Aegis of Champions.

Dota 2 reaches its highest peak since 2025

Steam Charts data puts Dota 2's recent peak at roughly 949,000 concurrent players.

That is particularly significant because the last time the game came close to this level was in September 2025, when Dota 2 reached a peak of 953,869 players.

The difference between the two figures is relatively small. The current peak is only around 5,000 players below last year's September high, putting Dota 2 within striking distance of its best result of the past year.

The September 2025 spike also coincided with The International season, reinforcing the connection between Dota 2's biggest esports event and increased activity within the game.

It is worth noting that these figures come from Steam Charts, a third-party tracking service. Valve does not provide a comparable official public historical player-count database, so Steam Charts figures are commonly used when discussing Dota 2's concurrent player numbers.

    Third consecutive increase

The latest surge is also notable because it represents the third consecutive monthly increase in Dota 2's player activity.

The game had been losing players through the spring of 2026. Steam Charts data shows that Dota 2's average concurrent player count fell to approximately 422,700 in May, following another decline in April.

    The trend changed in June.

Dota 2's average player count increased to roughly 466,000 in June, before climbing further in July. By late July, Steam Charts was already showing a rolling 30-day average of more than 545,000 players, representing a monthly increase of approximately 17%.

The August surge has now pushed the game's peak close to the one-million-player mark.

The numbers show a clear reversal from the downward trend seen earlier in the year.

    The International effect

The timing of the increase is difficult to overlook.

The International has traditionally been one of the strongest drivers of interest in Dota 2. Every year, the tournament brings the game's professional scene back into the spotlight, while players return to matchmaking to follow the latest strategies, heroes and trends coming from the biggest teams.

TI15 appears to be following the same pattern.

The tournament began on August 13, and the player-count spike has arrived during its group and playoff stages. Although the available data cannot prove that every additional player returned specifically because of The International, the timing strongly suggests that the tournament is contributing to the renewed interest.

The effect can also be amplified by the Compendium and Fantasy features introduced around The International. These systems give regular players additional reasons to follow matches, make predictions and interact with the tournament even if they are not watching every professional series.

The 2025 comparison is particularly interesting

The closest comparison is September 2025.

Dota 2 reached 953,869 concurrent players that month, according to Steam Charts, making it the game's highest peak since the previous major highs recorded years earlier.

That surge happened during the previous International season.

Now, almost a year later, Dota 2 has once again approached the same level while another edition of The International is underway.

The current figure does not break the September 2025 record. However, reaching approximately 949,000 concurrent players means that Dota 2 is once again operating at a level that seemed increasingly difficult to reach after the weaker months earlier in 2026.

Dota 2 is still below its all-time record

Despite the impressive result, the game remains well below its historical peak.

Dota 2's all-time concurrent player record is 1,291,328, achieved in March 2016.

The current 949,000-player peak is therefore around 26% below that record.

Nevertheless, the comparison with 2016 is not particularly useful when evaluating the game's current health. Dota 2 is now more than a decade old, and the PC gaming market, Steam ecosystem and competitive landscape have changed considerably since its record-setting period.

A more relevant comparison is the game's performance over the past 12–18 months.

From that perspective, the current numbers are clearly encouraging.

Is TI15 responsible for the entire growth?

    Probably not.

Dota 2's recovery started before The International 2026 began. The game recorded increases in June and July, meaning the current spike cannot be explained solely by the tournament.

Other factors may include gameplay updates, changes to the current meta, new content and the natural seasonal cycle surrounding major Dota 2 events.

However, The International remains the most obvious catalyst for the latest jump in attention.

The tournament gives players a reason to return at exactly the same time that professional teams are showcasing the current state of the game at the highest possible level.

For Dota 2, that combination can be extremely powerful.

Our Take: The real test comes after TI15

The 949,000-player peak is a great headline for Dota 2, but the more important numbers will come after The International ends.

A major tournament can produce a temporary spike as fans return to the game, watch professional matches and experiment with the strategies they see on stage.

The real sign of a recovery would be if Dota 2 manages to retain a significant portion of those players after TI15.

That is why September and October could be more important than August itself.

If the player count remains well above the spring levels once The International is over, Valve may have a much stronger foundation heading into the final months of 2026.

For now, however, the trend is undeniably positive.

Dota 2 has recorded three consecutive periods of growth, and its latest peak has climbed to roughly 949,000 concurrent players. The number is just below the 953,869 peak from September 2025 and represents the game's strongest showing since then.

With TI15 still underway in Shanghai, Dota 2 has another opportunity to turn a tournament-driven surge into something more lasting.

For the first time in months, the game's player-count chart is moving in the right direction — and The International 2026 appears to be giving that recovery an extra push.
